Sustainably supporting the local film and television industry.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 479 represents the workers in Georgia and Alabama’s thriving film and television industry. The film and television industry has been a leader in reducing its environmental impacts, as well as promoting sustainability and the need to reduce carbon emissions. They are bringing this ethos with them to Georgia.

In this spirit, the union engaged Velo Solar for two separate solar installations on its Atlanta Headquarters – the organization’s Union Hall and an ancillary building that is leased to vendor partners.

Key Features of the site

  • The Union Hall is approximately 45,000 square feet and is used for member meetings, member training and education, and offices for union staff.

  • A 2nd 40,000 square foot location next door to the Union Hall is leased to vendors in the film and television production community that are seeking eco-friendly space.

Primary Solar Goals

The film and television industry is investing heavily in sustainability and as a proud member of that community, IATSE Local 479 is committed to reducing the carbon impact of its union operations. The union also invested in solar to:

  1. Lower operating costs, which saves members on their dues.
  2. Attract new members and sustainability minded studios to the region.
  3. Enhance the value of real estate investments.
  4. Expand solar assets as a tangible example of its commitment to clean energy.
  5. Attract eco-conscious tenants.

The Solution

In phase 1, a 124 kW turnkey PV system was installed on the roof of the Atlanta union hall.

Because of the success of Phase 1, Local 479 came back to Velo to expand its solar portfolio by adding a 72 kW rooftop solar array to a second building.

Velo provided full design, engineering, procurement, construction, and project management for the installation of both rooftop solar arrays.

The Results

  • The union hall solar array provides almost 100% of the electricity needed for daily operations.

  • The 2nd location solar array differentiates the facility from similar spaces in the area, and creates low-carbon, rental space for union vendor partners.
